Seodaemun Prison – Cell Block
This red-brick cell block was newly constructed by the Japanese authorities after the March 1st Movement of 1919, in order to detain the large number of Koreans arrested during the independence protests. Portions of Cell Blocks 9, 10, 11, and 12 are still preserved today. Within these cramped and harsh conditions, Korean patriots endured forced labor and inhumane treatment while holding fast to their dream of national independence. These prison blocks offer a vivid and sobering glimpse into the suffering and resistance that defined Korea’s struggle against colonial oppression.
