Central Temple of Cheondogyo
The Central Temple of Cheondogyo was initiated by Son Byeong-hui, the third leader of Cheondogyo, in 1918 and completed in 1921. Cheondogyo is a Korean indigenous religion rooted in Donghak, which emphasized equality, peace, and national autonomy. This temple holds historical significance not only as the central place of worship for Cheondogyo followers but also because part of the construction fund—raised through donations from members—was secretly used to support the March 1st Independence Movement in 1919. As such, the temple stands as both a spiritual and political landmark in Korea’s fight against Japanese colonial rule.
