Seoul City Hall Plaza
Seoul Plaza, in front of the current City Hall, was the site where crowds of citizens gathered in 1919 following the funeral of Emperor Gojong. The widespread belief that his death was suspicious fueled public anger and ultimately sparked the March 1st Independence Movement. This square thus became one of the symbolic starting points of Korea’s nonviolent protests against Japanese colonial rule. The old City Hall building was constructed shortly after Japan implemented its colonial urban planning system, and over time, the area evolved into a central site for pro-democracy movements in Korea's modern history. Today, Seoul Plaza continues to serve as a space for public gatherings and civic expression.
