The Independence Movement: Layered Gazes
Gyeonggyojang
Gyeonggyojang served as the office and residence of Kim Gu (Baekbeom) after his return to Korea following its liberation in 1945. As the final base of operations for the Korean Provisional Government, it became the symbolic center of the last phase of Korea’s independence movement. This building is also the site of tragedy—where Kim Gu, one of Korea’s most revered independence leaders, was assassinated in 1949. It remains a historically significant place that captures both the hope for a unified government before Korea’s division and the enduring legacy of a leader who devoted his life to national independence and peace.
