이곳 서울역 광장은 1919년 3·1운동이 시작된 탑골공원에서부터 정동과 광화문을 거쳐 서울역까지 이어진 시위 행렬의 중요한 경유지로서, 도시 중심부에서 시민들이 대한독립만세를 외치며 저항의 불꽃을 전국으로 확산시킨 출발점입니다.
Seoul Station Memorial Site
The plaza in front of Seoul Station marks a significant waypoint in the March 1st Movement of 1919, Korea's first nationwide nonviolent protest against Japanese colonial rule. After the Declaration of Independence was read at Tapgol Park, demonstrators marched through key areas of central Seoul—including Jeong-dong and Gwanghwamun—before reaching this location. Here, citizens gathered to shout “Daehan Dongnip Manse!” (“Long live Korean independence!”), spreading the spirit of resistance from the heart of the capital to the rest of the country. Today, the site stands as a symbol of Korea’s enduring struggle for freedom and sovereignty.
