In Front of Severance Hospital
Severance Hospital, established in 1904 as Korea’s first modern Western-style hospital, played a vital role during the March 1st Independence Movement in 1919. At this site, doctors, medical students, and nurses actively participated in Korea’s struggle for liberation—helping to draft and distribute copies of the Declaration of Independence, and joining street protests against Japanese colonial rule. The hospital served not only as a medical institution but also as a key hub of intellectual and patriotic resistance during one of Korea’s most pivotal historical moments.
