Seodaemun Prison – Women’s Ward
The Women’s Ward at Seodaemun Prison, built in 1918, was established specifically to detain female independence activists. It became a site of immense suffering where many women, including the renowned patriot Yu Gwan-sun, endured harsh imprisonment, physical and psychological torture, and yet continued to resist through acts like the “prison Manse movement” (shouting for independence behind bars). Despite its cramped and dark conditions, the ward held hundreds of women who stood firm in their convictions. Today, this preserved facility serves as a symbolic exhibition space that honors the courage, resilience, and sacrifice of Korea’s female independence fighters.
