Seodaemun Prison – Main Cell Block
This red-brick cell block at Seodaemun Prison was constructed by the Japanese colonial government after the March 1st Movement in 1919 to accommodate the sharp increase in imprisoned independence activists. Designed in a fan-shaped 'panopticon' structure, it allowed guards to monitor all cells from a central point, symbolizing the colonial regime’s intent to control and suppress resistance through constant surveillance. The architectural layout itself became a tool of oppression, making this facility a stark reminder of how space was weaponized against Korea’s independence fighters.
