4월 12일부터 23일까지 인사동 갤러리경북에서 “인간의 본성에 대해서”라는 주제로 개인전을 개최하게 되었습니다.

인간의 본성에 대한 이해와 시각적 표현을 위해 노력한 결과물입니다. 이를 통해 인간의 다양한 감정과 욕구, 그리고 그것이 만들어낸 현재 우리 스스로의 모습에 관심과 사유를 자극하고자 합니다.

또한, 기존의 작업은 몽골의 거칠지만 아름다운 대자연에서 살아가고 있는 유목민과 풍경을 다루었습니다. 우리가 살아가는 현대사회에서도 잊지 말아야 할 소중한 가치와 지혜를 되새기게 하며, 대자연과 인간의 모습을 보여줌으로써 새로운 시각과 경험을 공유할 수 있도록 노력했습니다.

이번 전시회에서는 작품들과 함께 저와의 소통을 위한 시간도 마련되어 있습니다.

Exploring Human Nature

I am very curious about human beings. I think we are probably not that different from each other. We are social animals and we always interact with many other people in our relationships. Through this, we try to connect with each other and maintain better relationships. This is also a process of getting to know ourselves better.

What caught my attention in this exhibition is human nature. Based on my experience, observation, and imagination, I tried to capture the complex and diverse emotions and desires of human beings. This nature has created the footsteps of human history so far, and because it is the path we must continue on, I created this work with special interest.

In this exhibition, I expressed three main themes through photographs:

<Flags>: This work represents the political tendencies of humans who walk following their leaders. The flags represent different political beliefs and values, while the people walking underneath them are trying to find their sense of belonging and identity.

<Worship>: This work represents the human nature of wanting to rely on and worship something, even if it is not something they created, in order to feel a sense of achievement. We feel a sense of stability and protection as we worship strong power and ability.

<Freedom>: This work represents the constant struggle of human nature between being trapped and being protected. We are obsessed with things like money, power, and status, and in order to obtain these things, our thoughts and actions are restricted.

This is a picture of our nature to feel a sense of belonging and stability easily and comfortably while following a leader depicted as a flag. People inside the flag lose their individuality and sense of responsibility, and their behavior is emphasized to be regulated, rule-based, and unconscious. Such behavior is determined by the leader’s choice rather than an individual’s choice. And this group’s decision is based on emotions. People are easily led by strong emotions, especially in emotional states such as anxiety, fear, and confusion, they blindly follow the leader. And these emotions are generally conveyed unconsciously, and some individuals become sensitive to these emotions and react accordingly.

People who blindly follow the leader are a group of individuals who are sensitive to the public’s emotions, and they are in a state of confusion within the group, making them more susceptible to the leader’s influence. To emphasize this point, I led people while wearing a black flag and black clothes with a blindfold on the leader. People expressed themselves as blindly following the leader even though they were wearing white clothes and walking on an empty plain.

I tried to represent <Worship> as if it were a collection of logos of the world’s most influential companies in one place, making it look like a temple from the past. They, who have strong capital and technology, have many supporters like the gods in the past temples. Although we feel like we live in a new era every day where technology is advancing, I believe that the nature of human beings is not much different from the past. This is because we relieve our insecurity and gain a stable sense of existence through our parents, family, and education in our childhood. However, as adults, we must take responsibility for our thoughts and actions to maintain this stability, and as a result, uncertainty and insecurity increase. This uncertainty and insecurity make us seek strong power to maintain fundamental consciousness. Therefore, strong power gives us a sense of security and protection, and such strong power becomes our idol. Furthermore, we are also attracted to the strong power that others have because we want others to respect and recognize us.

However, blind worship of such strong power threatens human freedom and individuality and ignores respect and consideration for others. Therefore, I want to say that it is important to live a free life free from blind worship of such strong power.

I tried to express <Freedom> as a bird in a cage. The beautiful nature shown in the background can be seen as the bird being trapped, but it can also be thought of as being protected from predators. I tried to express the tendency to escape from problems such as anxiety, pain, and powerlessness that we face in our daily lives with <Freedom>. This escape is related to how we perceive the world. I think we are losing our freedom by pursuing “fake freedom” in our everyday lives. We become obsessed with things like money, power, and status, and our thoughts and actions are restricted in order to obtain these things. Therefore, I think that we are all living our lives trapped in an invisible cage.

Psychologist E. Fromm suggests that to find true freedom and escape from “fake freedom,” we must connect with our inner nature. He defines a free person as someone who explores their inner self, discovers their values, and acts based on those values. To do this, we need independent thinking and creative ability, take responsibility for ourselves and others, and have the courage and will to lead our own lives. I wondered if the feeling of pity we have when we see a bird trapped in a cage reflects on ourselves.

I am delighted to be able to show you the work that I have been preparing for the past year through this exhibition. I am not sure if my work as an artist will give you enough satisfaction, but I hope you can share in the gratitude that I extend to you. While my works may be imperfect, I hope they can offer new perspectives and inspirations for our lives and art, creating more shining moments in our lives.

As I conclude, I would like to express my gratitude to the audience who joined me in this exhibition, as well as to the fellow artists and officials who put in a lot of effort in preparing for the exhibition.

인간의 본성에 대해서

저는 인간에 대해서 무척이나 궁금합니다. 아마도 여러분들과 별로 다르지 않을 것이라 생각합니다. 우리는 사회적 동물이며, 다른 많은 사람들과 항상 관계속에서 상호 작용하며 살아 갑니다. 이로써 우리는 서로 연결되고 더 나은 관계를 유지하려고 합니다. 이것은 나 자신에 대해서 알아가는 과정이기도 합니다.

이번 전시에서 제가 주목한 것은 인간의 본성입니다. 자신의 경험과 관찰, 상상력을 바탕으로 인간의 복잡하고 다양한 감정과 욕구를 담아 보려고 노력했습니다. 이런 본성이 지금까지 만들어온 인간의 발자취이며, 앞으로 가야 하는 길이기 때문에 특별한 관심을 가지고 이런 작품을 만들었습니다.

이 번 전시에서는 크게 3가지 주제를 사진으로 표현해 봤습니다.

<깃발> : 리더를 따라서 걸어가는 인간의 정치적인 성향에 대해서 표현한 작품입니다. 깃발은 각각 다른 정치적 주장과 가치관을 나타내며, 그 아래서 걷는 사람들은 자신의 소속감과 정체성을 찾으려 합니다.

<숭배> : 무엇인가 의지하고 숭배하며, 비록 내가 만든 것이 아니라도 성취감을 느끼고 싶어하는 본성을 표현한 작품입니다. 강한 힘과 능력을 숭배하면서 우리는 안정감과 보호감을 느끼게 됩니다.

<자유> : 갇혀 있는 것과 보호받는 것 사이에서 언제나 끊임없는 고민을 하는 인간의 본성을 표현한 작품입니다. 우리는 돈, 권력, 지위 등과 같은 것들에 집착하며, 이러한 것들을 얻기 위해 우리의 생각과 행동이 제한되어 버립니다.

<깃발>로 표현한 리더를 따르며 그 속에서 쉽고 편안하게 소속감과 안정감을 느끼는 우리의 본성에 대한 사진입니다. <깃발>속 사람들은 개성과 책임감이 상실되고, 그들의 행동은 규율 적이고 규칙적이며, 무의식적이라는 것을 강조했습니다. 이러한 그들의 행동은 한 개인의 선택보다는 리더의 선택에 따라 결정됩니다. 그리고 이러한 집단의 선택은 감정에 기반합니다. 사람은 강한 감정에 이끌리기 쉽고, 특히도 불안, 공포, 혼란 등의 감정 상태에서는 맹목적으로 리더를 따르게 됩니다. 그리고 이러한 감정은 대개 무의식적으로 전달되며, 일부 사람들은 이러한 감정에 민감하게 반응하게 됩니다.

맹목적으로 리더를 따르는 사람들은 대중의 감정에 민감하게 반응하는 개인들로 이루어진 그룹이며, 이들은 집단 내에서 일종의 혼란 상태에 놓이게 되고, 이러한 상태에서는 더욱 리더의 영향력에 쉽게 빠지게 된다고 생각합니다.

이러한 점을 강조하기 위해서 저는 리더에게 검은 깃발과 검은 옷을 입고 눈가리개를 하면서 사람들을 이끌게 했습니다. 사람들은 자신이 비록 흰색 옷을 입었음에도 불구하고 맹목적으로 리더를 따라 아무것도 없는 벌판을 걸어가는 것으로 표현했습니다.

<숭배>는 세계에서 가장 영향력 있는 기업들의 로고들을 한자리에 모아 놓은 것이 마치 과거의 신전처럼 보이도록 표현해 봤습니다. 강력한 자본과 기술력을 가지고 있는 그들은 과거 신전에 모셔진 신들처럼 많은 지지자들을 가지고 있습니다. 우리는 매일 기술이 발전하는 새로운 시대에 살고 있는 것처럼 느끼지만 결국 이간의 본성은 과거의 그것과 크게 다르지 않다고 생각합니다.

왜냐하면 우리는 어린 시절에 부모나 가족, 교육 등을 통해 자신의 불안감을 완화하고 안정적인 존재감을 얻습니다. 그러나 성인이 되면서 이러한 안정감을 유지하기 위해서는 자신의 생각과 행동에 대한 책임을 져야 하며, 그에 따라 불확실성과 불안감이 증가하게 됩니다. 이러한 불안감과 불확실성은 우리가 근본적인 존재의식을 유지하기 위해 강한 힘을 찾게 만듭니다. 따라서, 강한 힘은 우리에게 안정감과 보호감을 제공한다는 느낌을 주며, 이러한 강한 힘은 우리의 우상으로 떠오르게 됩니다. 또한, 우리는 다른 사람들이 우리를 존중하고 인정해 주는 것을 원하기 때문에, 다른 사람들이 가진 강한 힘에 매료되기도 합니다.

하지만, 이러한 강한 힘에 대한 맹목적인 숭배는 인간의 자유와 개성을 위협하며, 타인에 대한 존중과 배려를 무시하게 만듭니다. 따라서, 우리는 이러한 맹목적인 강한 힘의 숭배에서 벗어나 자유로운 삶을 살아가는 것이 중요하다고 말하고 싶습니다.

<자유>는 새장속에 있는 새를 표현해 봤습니다. 배경으로 보여지는 아름다운 자연은 새가 갇혀 있는 것으로 보여지기도 하지만 반대로 포식자로부터 보호받는 것으로도 생각할 수 있습니다. <자유>는 우리가 일상적인 삶에서 마주치는 불안, 고통, 무력감 등의 문제로부터 도피하려는 경향을 표현하려고 했습니다. 이러한 도피는 우리가 세상을 인식하는 방식과 관련이 있습니다. 우리가 일상적인 삶에서 “가짜 자유”를 추구하는 것으로 자유를 잃고 있다고 생각됩니다. 우리는 돈, 권력, 지위 등과 같은 것들에 집착하며, 이러한 것들을 얻기 위해 우리의 생각과 행동이 제한되어 버립니다. 따라서 우리는 누구나 보이지 않는 새장속에 스스로 갇혀 삶을 살아가는 것이라 생각합니다.

심리학자 E.프롬은 이러한 “가짜 자유”를 벗어나 진정한 자유를 찾기 위해서는, 자신의 내면에 있는 본성과 연결되어야 한다고 말합니다. 그는 자유로운 인간이란 자신의 내면을 탐구하고, 자신의 가치관을 발견하며, 그 가치관을 바탕으로 행동할 수 있는 인간이라고 정의합니다. 이를 위해서는 우리는 독립적인 사고와 창의적인 능력을 가지고, 우리 자신과 타인에게 책임을 지고, 우리 자신의 삶을 이끌어 나가는 용기와 의지를 가져야 한다고 했습니다.

우리가 새장속의 새를 보면서 갇혀 있어 불쌍하다고 느끼는 감정은 우리 스스로의 모습을 비추고 있기 때문이지 않을까 생각해 봤습니다.

나는 이번 전시회를 통해 지난 1년간 준비해온 작품을 여러분에게 보여드릴 수 있어 기쁘게 생각합니다. 작가로서 준비해온 작품이 여러분들께 충분한 만족감을 드릴 수 있는지는 모르겠습니다. 다만 제가 여러분께 드리는 감사함을 함께 가져 가시길 바랍니다. 부족한 작품들이지만 우리 삶과 예술에 대한 새로운 시선, 새로운 영감을 주어, 삶에 더욱 빛나는 순간들을 만들어줄 것을 기원합니다.

저의 전시와 함께해 주신 관객 여러분, 그리고 작가들, 전시회를 준비하며 많은 노고를 하신 관계자분들께 감사의 말씀을 전하며, 이야기를 마무리하겠습니다.
